Poo, LJ. You have failed me.

I had one before the site was revamped, and that annoyed me so I elected not to make another. That said, I'm ridiculously curious about how I would Sort. :P

My husband would have it that I'm a Slytherin; I don't know how that would translate to Ilvermorny. Perhaps I'll look into it after we return from the dog park (Albus' patience is wearing thin).

It's been nice actually livejournal-ing. I haven't answered comments in real time in ages!

Ah, it's easy enough. I get the annoyance though. But I think I saw a feature somewhere where you can retrieve your former Sorting etc.? I might be wrong though, I didn't look so closely.

Was it your husband or the previous Pottermore that Sorted you into Slytherin?

I'm not sure the Hogwarts and Ilvermorny houses are a match-for-match. It did make me wonder though whether other schools had houses too.

Yes, it really was delightful to chat. Especially today. Kind of bleak here and dark now.

Shog Sorted me, as well as himself. He's certain I'm a Slytherin and that he's a Hufflepuff. ;)

Today we have nothing but rain; my poor dog almost drowned in his cone of shame when I took him out earlier. I hope your weather has improved!
Jan. 2nd, 2017 03:06 pm (UTC)
So, what does he base his Sorting on (I assume he doesn't secretly shape-shift into a certain Hat)?

Aww, I'm really sorry for your dog.

Well, it's worse – snowing heavily through a wall of fog. Almost feels like being back in NY. *lol* So I'm watching "The Empire Strikes Back" and doing nothing special... I'm a bit ashamed. I wanted to start re-reading "Order of the Phoenix" but – ahm... yeah.
Jan. 2nd, 2017 03:28 pm (UTC)
Hee! Well, Shog doesn't care for etiquette and politesse; he believes them to be socially accepted ways in which we (people in general) control each other. I consider them to be how we get through daily life without hurting and killing each other, and therefore, necessities. Shog would have it that I'm sneaky because I am not as baldly honest with people as he prides himself on being (he's actually more tactful and sensitive in many ways that he can see, himself, or we'd not be married); sneakiness, according to Shog, is a Slytherin trait. I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's the one about which he's most adamant.

Albus is sleeping by the fire with his head on a milk bone and his cat in his cone; he's gotten over the experience. ;)

Oh, no! It's a good day for a movie, then—and it's nice that you have the time to relax. Don't feel guilty. I should be dusting books and doing laundry in between getting some editing done, but I'm putting it off in favor of catching up with fandom.

I'm also trying to decide what to do about my comms in light of LJ perhaps going down for good. I think I can make a good case for archiving them in a way that I cannot justify migrating them, but I'm still debating that with various, much more knowledgeable people. I can't stand the thought of everyone's work just disappearing one day if I can help it.

Would you mind if I friended you? I've enjoyed our discussion and wouldn't mind getting to know you better, and right now, my journal setting's screen anyone not on my flist (due to a troll-related issue). :)
Jan. 2nd, 2017 03:48 pm (UTC)
Hah! I wonder what your husband would make of me. If I'm honest, I think my Ravenclaw sorting has a lot to do with not really fitting in anywhere else: I'm not daring or courageous, I'm not cunning or ambitious, and if there is toil I'm really keen on avoiding it. ;)

That's good – I share your dogs feelings about getting wet and cold. Another reason why I'm mad at the weather. ;)

Hm... I still think that LJ will prevail. But sure, archiving things sounds reasonable if there are things you want to preserve. Maybe you can set up something on wordpress? That's kind of static unless you choose to edit it. I don't know – one of my favourite authors took down her Hook/Aurora fic because she fell out with some people in the fandom and I deplore ever since that I didn't save them as a pdf. Then again it's her right as an author. It's kind of a tricky thing...

And no, not at all. I love making new friends. :) If there is anything you would like to know, don't hesitate to ask! As for the troll-issue... well, I don't go after first years in their boarding school's bathroom, I hope I'm off the hook at least with regard to that. ;)

I will return to reply properly to you in a bit; I have a bit of a pet-related situation. :P
Jan. 2nd, 2017 04:52 pm (UTC)
Oh dear, sounds like a little chaos. Hope you all get to settle down and you get your well-deserved bath. :)

I had a hasty change of clothing, but I will soak myself pruney as soon as I can manage it.

Excellent plan! *thumbs up*
Jan. 2nd, 2017 11:27 pm (UTC)

I really did mean to return earlier, but life got in the way. We had unexpected guests, which was lovely, but then my husband decided that it was important to do a bazillion household tasks while also saving all my comms to XML (something about which I know nothing but which he required my presence *snorts), and I've barely had a moment to sit.

Now that I am sitting, yay, Ravenclaw! Are you particularly bookish? I've always thought that being Ravenclaw would mean having a license to read All the Things. :)

Albus has since migrated to the hearth blanket and irritated my ancient cat, Zelda. I will be posting pictures later.

I hope you're right about LJ; certainly, we've seen it survive through a lot of change. Oh, that's sad about the fic! I save fic and art to my drive all the time, and after a back-up snafu in '07, I became diligent about saving my fic to files. I don't think that people begrudge us the right to save things for our own use; it's when we post them elsewhere that things get sticky.

I'm so glad! I've not made any new friends in a while, and it's quite nice to have met you. I will check out your journal as soon as I can, but I am interested to know what fandoms you enjoy.

As for the troll-issue... well, I don't go after first years in their boarding school's bathroom, I hope I'm off the hook at least with regard to that. ;)

Something tells me that we'll get along well. ;P

Ah yes – there's some export tool for that I think. *nods* Personally I don't know about backing up my journal. Yes, it is basically my online life since 2004 but will I ever read through it again? Doubtful. I recently disposed of nine years of Latin class notes, when I realised I hadn't looked at them in the past twenty. That should tell you something. ;)

"All the Things" as in Hyperbole and a Half? ;) I'm not sure if I'm particularly bookish. Maybe not to be honest. Though I made it through my PhD.

Yeah – and those were such beautiful fics of one of my favourite pairings. *sigh* Should have saved them to my computer. I can't regret that enough.

Sure, let me know what you think. I haven't posted as much lately but hope to eventually get back to it. Maybe. Possibly. As for fandoms – oh, a whole lot. According to AO3 I've written fics in 20 but I've watched and read so much more. :) As for HP, I don't know... the fandom has always made me nervous (most likely because I'm not into any of the major ships) but a while ago I tried to compile some (secondary) literature in a post. The links are surely down by now but in spite of my obsencely slow internet I can definitely try and reupload if you happen to be interested in anything.

I think that ljarchive's been compromised, so if you do decide to save your journal, it would be better to use BlogBooker (which used to be LJBook but now handles a lot of platforms). After losing comments to a back-up snafu once, I'm calmer about the idea of losing them again (but Shog dumped all my journals/comms to XML, so even though it won't be pretty, I've got all the info, anyway).

Nine years of notes—I'm amazed you had so many to dispose of! I suspect you've forgotten more Latin than I've ever known. :P

Yes, as in Hyperbole and a Half! Someone sent me the Alot comic, and I've enjoyed it since then; Shog has everything and is religious about reading it. :D

I've only glanced through your journal, but it's beautiful and looks full of interesting things to read. I look forward to it. I'm afraid that I keep my journal fairly light and fandom-focused these days, with a healthy dose (mostly flocked before December 2016 due to a troll) of cheerful, RL posts. I like to leave the serious, less-entertaining side of life offline where it belongs. ;)

Have you seen the Snowflake Challenge? That looks like fun. I'm behind, but I think I might give it a go.

Thanks for the info, I consider it.

Oh there was a lot. I still have folders and folders of things I haven't even looked it. It's probably maths for uni. So all in all, I used to know a few things but you know the saying, the more you learn, the less you know.

Ah, got to love Hyperbole and a Half. So many things parallel my own experiences. ;) Take the one with the grandfather's birthday cake for example.

I respect that some people do not want to talk about the serious, less-entertaining side of life as you called it but for me, who has nobody to talk to about these things in real life it's kind of essential that I have a space where I can talk about these things. Certainly nobody is obligated to read or comment on these parts. You're welcome to skip them. I don't mind one bit. And I try to balance that with a lot other posts – usually recommendations or fandom talk. It's just that – I do not want to censor myself or wonder "oh is it okay if I'm posting this or that... people might find me dreary" in my own space. I hope you understand. I think it's important that everyone feels safe enough to express themselves. That's why I use LJ and keep it f-locked.

Ah yes, I remember the Snowflake Challenge. I've done it many years ago... well... four years ago. ;) I'm just really really rubbish at keeping up with ALL THE THINGS/deadlines.

Oh, I touch on those things, but I try to keep it light in here so that I won't dwell on certain things out there. Like you, however, it's good to have a place that I know I can unburden myself—and I would never expect anyone to self-censor, particularly in a journaling space.

I meant to take a crack at the Snowflake Challenge today, but as usual, time got away from me.

That's fair enough. It's hard to judge oneself so I don't know about my journal. The thing is, I'm not prepared to put on some fake cheerfulness and I'm not into "dwell positivity posts". By the same token, as I mentioned above, I understand if there are topics others rather not read about. I don't expect anyone to or to comment for that matter. I hope I provide enough other content that might be engaging or interesting enough to talk about. Though I admit that from time to time when things are busy I don't post as much though I try to keep up with comments.

Well, I suppose you could always take the parts of the Snowflake Challenge that you want to post about and do it whenever you like? It's really hard to keep up with something every day for 30 days (just look at my exercise regime). I guess that's why it's called a challenge. But nonetheless I think there are definitely some things in there that provide good talking points, no matter when and under what motto you decide to take a go at them. :)

Good for you; there's no reason to feign cheerfulness, ever (says she who did it for years in various contexts). There are benefits to getting older. :P

I just noticed that you're using a Cassie icon from Hex! I loved that show but only got to see half of the first series before losing access to it. (There's a list somewhere on my laptop of all such shows I want to find again; it's entirely too long. I should prolly stop keeping lists like that; I park things on them and forget about them. *meeps*)

Cool beans! I'll try to find the time tomorrow. :)

Hah, yes I went through a phase in my early 30s when I was a bit better – then things happened and now I'm pretty insecure again. But pretending to be something I'm not costs too much energy and I save it for special real life events.

Yes! Cassie! Hex! I loved the first season. It had so much potential. Season 2 was a bit of a mess in my personal opinion. But I really liked Roxanne's storyline. I think you can find streaming links here.
