Mom's decided to rest tonight, so have a poll!

I know that Rowling treats Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as canon, but given that it wasn't part of the book series, is a play, and she didn't actually write it alone (which makes it a multi-author fan play to my mind), do you think it's canon? I ask as someone who treats as core canon only the book series, and as supplemental canon, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I never got into Pottermore, and since that info wasn't available to everyone (without jumping through hoops) and was changeable/removable, I've never treated it as canon any more than I've treated Rowling's extra-book pronouncements as such. I have no intention of treating a play written well after canon's close with other people as canon, and movie series canon is just that, movie series canon—but that's just my opinion. What's yours?

Poll #2051457 Harry Potter and the Cursed Canon

Is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child canon?

Sort of, or I don't know---see comments.

P.S. Perhaps you think that Cursed Child is canon, but you're going to ignore it (much as you do the Epilogue)? I should have made that a question in the poll. :P

P.P.S. Given that this is fandom, does it actually matter if it's canon or not?

Go into it expecting the literary equivalent of cotton candy and if you get more out of it, so much the better. I know many people are looking at it as a goldmine for their non-canon ships so there's that as well. And it is said to be spectacular looking on stage which is where it should be experienced.

I'm a bit sad myself that I didn't enjoy it and more, that I feel it has damaged my feelings towards the original canon in some small way. At first, having been spoiled about the play, I was going to avoid the script but I borrowed it from my neighbor. Curiosity gets me every time.

I hope in time, I can completely divorce TCC from the feelings I hold for the originals since it has been a decade long love affair and I would hate for it to end over something as insubstantial as this. I need to adopt your viewpoint.

I will do that! :)

I always tell myself to remember that movie canon has nothing to do with book canon; I suspect that I'll soon be telling myself that play canon has nothing to do with book canon, either. :P

Shog spoiled me for the play at once; there was never any hope for me there.
