Help students with Just One Book! (ETA)

I just read about the Just One Book drive (thank you, psyfic, for linking) to benefit a (broke) tiny rural town's depleted library, and I've emailed the author to request the teacher wish lists that she speaks of in her article. I mean to send more than one book!

ETA: Here is the teachers' wish list!

The junior/senior high school hasn't been able to purchase anything since the '90s, and the library, currently being revamped, needs

. . . racially diverse books. We need graphic novels. We need women’s studies. We need science. We need series. We need film. We need comics. We need music. We need biographies of important people. Looking for Young Adult. Classics. We want zines! Contemporary. Poetry. Everything that would make a difference in a young person’s life. Writers send us YOUR BOOK. We have many non-readers who we’d love to turn on to reading. We need a way to take this tiny area and bring it into the 21st century.

If you have a book, a CD, or a DVD to spare, please donate it to

Greenville High School/Indian Valley Academy
Library Project Attn: Margaret Garcia
117 Grand Street
Greenville, CA 95947

Nota bene: If you send anything during July when the school is closed, please send your materials to

Library Project/Margaret Garcia
PO Box 585
Greenville, CA 95947

I will link to the teachers' wishlist when I receive it, but any age-appropriate book would be welcome. I can't imagine what a teenhood without a lot of books must be like; let's help make such deprivation a memory for the students of Greenville High School/Indian Valley Academy!

P.S. If you don't want to support Amazon, you can contact Dawn at Books & Beyond, one of only two "local" bookstores near the school, to order books (at a 20% discount) for the Library Project!

If you'd like to spread the word, please cut and paste the following information into a post of your own:

The two books I'm sending aren't being released until later this year, but I think they'll be suitable.

Rad Women Worldwide: Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History by Kate Schatz

Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World by Rachel Ignotofsky

That should do the trick. Now I need to hang around on this earth long enough to see what amazing adults turn up in about 10-15 years because of this :-)

Those are great books to send! Shog and I elected to send graphic novels and one book series apiece; we couldn't keep it to just one book each. :P

Oh, and sorry to spam, but did you know that the Amazon list for the school went from 11 pages to one in only one afternoon?! They're going to need new shelves!

I wondered why the wish list was so small - what a wonderful reason for it! And the followup post :-)

They've added to it since I last checked, but I'm amazed by how quickly and how much people have helped! :D
